About The Flinders Ranges...

The Flinders Ranges of South Australia is by far the largest, least populated and most arid part of the State. It stretches across the north of South Australia, from north of the Nullabor National Park in the west to the Chowilla Recreation Reserve in the east. The region only touches the coast near the riverside industrial centre of Port Pirie and the head of the Spencer Gulf, 322 km north of the State's capital, Adelaide.

Its proximity to the Flinders Ranges has led to Port Pirie becoming a thriving centre for eco-tourism including the Pichi Richi steam railway, which runs north-east to the town of Quorn.

The Flinders Ranges themselves are a discontinuous range stretching for over 430 km from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna. The ranges' best-known landmark is Wilpena Pound, a sickle-shaped, natural amphitheatre of mountains covering nearly 80 square km.

This area has become one of the Region's most popular tourist destinations, its modern facilities catering for those not familiar with the semi-arid conditions. The closest town to the north is Blinman, and to the south, Hawker, with Port Pirie being very close. Near Hawker are also the Yourambulla Caves, which contain a fine array of Aboriginal cave paintings.

Numerous small areas of the ranges have been designated as national parks, and attract bushwalkers of all varieties of expertise.

To the north and west of Hawker, the Region contains a large collection of endorheic lakes (ie drainage basins that do empty out into the ocean), which, except for occasional floods, are very large playas or saltpans. On the infrequent occasions that it fills, the largest of these, Lake Eyre, becomes Australia's largest inland body of water.
